The project, in a nutshell
There are currently only four Gambian Sign Language Interpreters (GSLIs) in The Gambia. This is nowhere near enough to meet the needs of Deaf Gambians. With almost no government support for Deaf people or GSL interpreting, our project aims to make the difference.
The Gambia Sign Language interpreter project is small and focussed, aiming to support Deaf Gambians' access to family, education, employment and health care, through funding the provision of, and increasing the quality and numbers of GSLIs.
We do this by:
100% of donations are sent to The Gambia and used for the project, and being a small project, we make sure every penny is well spent . Full accounts are available to donors on request, so you can see exactly how your and all of the money is used.
The Gambian Deaf Children Support Project (GDCSP) process our donations and collect any Gift Aid. They work with deaf children and adults in Gambia, have charitable status for tax purposes and are registered for Gift Aid (Ref: XT21686). (We are unable to register as a charity ourselves, as our annual turnover is under £5,000 pa).

We do this by:
- Paying the salaries & travel costs of two community interpreters.
- Providing interpreter training and 1:1 support from UK interpreter peers.
- Supporting the development of ASLI-G, the Association of Sign Language Interpreters - Gambia.
- Paying for three of the four interpreters in The Gambia to attend the inaugural African Sign Language Interpreter's (AFSLI) conference in Nigeria. (See their blog).

How you can help now
As it was such an important learning opportunity we have sent three interpreters from The Gambia to the inaugural AFSLI conference in Nigeria, despite not having sufficient funds yet.
Keeping costs as low as possible, it has still cost £2,820 for flights, accommodation, conference fees, etc., and our regular donations do not cover this amount, leaving us with a shortfall.
If you’re able to help, with a one-off donation, by becoming a regular supporter, or both, that would be fab. Suggestions below.

How you can get involved
There are four ways you can get involved, as an individual or company:
1) Become a regular donor. Individuals currently commit to donating between £5 and £15 a month. This helps us pay for the interpreters' salaries & travel costs, and contributes to the training fund.
2) Make a one off donation. Sending the interpreters to the conference in Nigeria cost £2,600. Training new interpreters and helping with their salary costs is likely to cost around £10,000. We can only afford to do this work with substantial additional donations.
3) Donate equipment (laptops, video cameras, etc.) for the student interpreters to use.
4) Contribute your skills - in accounting, fundraising, sign language / interpreting training, etc.

More about donating
1) Regular or one-off donations can be made directly to our project account. If you are eligible for Gift Aid, we'll ask you to fill in the Gift Aid form so that when we transfer the money to GDSCP, they can claim the Gift Aid. Please use the donate buttons above or contact me.
2) If your donation needs to go to a charity with charitable status for tax purposes, then they can be made to the Gambia Deaf Children Support Project, making it clear that the donation is for the Gambia Interpreting project. See their website for how to donate, or contact me so that I can give you their details and send the Gift Aid form if relevant.
3) We are currently exploring the use of donation platforms, as donations through all platforms incur a cost, even if just for processing payments. We will put the details here if we choose one.
